My goal was to interview people from diverse backgrounds, each with different reasons for leaving their home countries. I wanted to highlight a variety of perspectives while broadening the scope beyond Bournemouth to include a national view. I feel I’ve achieved this by attending a protest in London and returning there for three additional interviews. Although I had planned to conduct interviews in Warwickshire, last-minute cancellations prevented me from covering that broader geographical range.
Despite these challenges, I’m proud of the range of voices I’ve included, each contributing an important perspective on the topic of immigration:
Lawyer:
Robert Suddrey - Immigration lawyer specialist, consultant & representative
Charity Initiatives:
William Brook-Hart – Volunteer and trustee with the Southampton and Winchester Visitors Group,
Pete Wearden - Volunteer and committee member for Stand Up to Racism Bournemouth,
Mike Harle - Former Head of Advisory and Community Services at International Care Network Bournemouth,
Peter Green – Trustee of Dorset Race Equality Council.
Political Voice:
Neil Duncan-Jordan, Labour MP for Poole
Protest participants:
Alimamy Bengura,
Maz Garsire,
Sijaad Hussain,
Jason Langford.
Voices of Immigrants:
- Sky Caesar – Family reasoning,
- Monika Tame – Opportunities,
- Maryna Sera – Refugee,
- Pariksha Ghimire – International student.
Immigration is such a big topic with multiple connected themes, such as housing issues and language barriers like the challenges of learning English. It was impossible to cover everything in detail. However, I believe I’ve effectively addressed key areas like discrimination, isolation, charity initiatives and political perspectives, which were central to my pitch.
I feel confident that I’ve successfully captured the core themes I set out to explore and presented a well-rounded view of the subject through my interviews and research.
