I am a 21-year-old Multimedia Journalism student in my third and final year at Bournemouth University. Currently, I serve as the Head of Social Media & Branding for Nerve Radio, a student-run station, where I have also been a presenter for the past three years. Additionally, I write entertaining articles about student culture for The Tab Bournemouth.

Last night, the Nerve committee headed to the O2 Arena for the @studentradioassociation Awards which was a celebration of last year’s committee’s dedication, well-deserved nominations, and incredible wins 🏆🌟

This morning, I had an amazing opportunity to tour @bauermedia.uk home to @kissfmuk, @magicfm, and @absoluteradio🎙️💜

It was so inspiring to see how these stations work behind the scenes.

Last night, from 7 PM until 6 AM this morning, I had the chance to participate in Bournemouth University’s 10-hour live programme covering the US Election 🇺🇸📺🗳️

As one of the online editors, I was lucky to work alongside a fantastic team. Me and @sam.reporter collaborated closely with the social media team, coordinated interviews with pundits, brainstormed article ideas, and managed fellow students👩🏻‍💻📝

It was an amazing experience working with the Media and Communication faculty students and staff. Thank you to everyone involved, it was a successful and memorable night 🌅

What Inspired My Major Multimedia Project? 💫

I wanted to choose something that truly resonated with me, something I could delve into with passion and purpose. Looking for inspiration, I turned not only to my past work but to real life. I thought about what drives me, who inspires me, and then it hit me: my parents.

My father left Cyprus at 20, right after his mandatory military service, with no knowledge of English, no qualifications, no money, and no family support. He started from scratch to build a better life in the UK. My mother’s story is similar—she left Turkey at 18 after receiving a scholarship to university. She knew little English but wasn’t fluent enough and had no family support, yet she was determined to build a better future.

My parent’s journey was filled with countless hardships, and I wouldn’t be where I am today without their sacrifices. No words can express how grateful I am for everything they’ve done.

From their stories, I realised there are countless others who have left their home countries in search of a better life. I want to highlight the experiences of these individuals, exploring why they left, whether due to war, economic hardship, or family and personal circumstances.

My project will focus on their challenges in integrating into a new society, the emotional toll of being separated from loved ones, the racism and discrimination they’ve faced, and how romanticised views of the UK often clash with harsh realities. I also want to highlight the support available to them through different organisations, giving a voice to those whose stories need to be heard.

What an exciting and rewarding week this has been!

Back in November, I had the privilege of completing the Financial Times News School Programme. Alongside this, l had a six-month mentorship with Bruce Macfarlane, who provided me with so much advice and guidance on my university projects and presentations. Fast forward to this week, and I’ve had the amazing opportunity to do a week-long work experience at Financial Times HQ in London📍

Throughout the week, I worked with an incredible team to pitch and present a business proposal 🎯 I also attended workshops that helped me sharpen my skills and expand my knowledge. One of the most memorable parts of the week was getting to interview Olivia Esposito, Lauren Palfrey, Nadia Elkeir and Jon Slade, who shared valuable insights about their roles at FT and the media industry as a whole.

Another highlight was the exclusive tour of the FT building and studio 🎥 It was an incredible experience to see firsthand where all the creativity and innovation takes place!

A huge shoutout to Jacqi Dobsen, who made this week possible and has been a fantastic mentor 👏🏼 Her leadership, guidance, and support have been incredible, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to learn from her.

Finally, it was great to reconnect with my fellow News School alumni and build even stronger relationships with them. It’s always inspiring to be around such talented and driven people! I’m feeling so motivated and excited for the future 💫

I was honored to be nominated alongside some amazing journalists and thrilled to have won the Best Journalist award🥇I’m incredibly shocked and thankful 🙏🏼

Presenting my own show on @nerveradiobu for the past two years has been an incredible experience. Today, I had an incredible opportunity of representing Bournemouth University and presenting my research proposal at the British Conference of Undergraduate Research (BCUR) 2024 hosted at London School of Economics.

“Is there a double standard in TikTok’s depiction of male and female athletes in their most enraged states?”

- The media treats genders differently, especially when it comes to athletes.

- Is there even more inequality when athletes, especially women, show strong emotions?

- Women in sports media are stereotyped based on their sexual appeal and femininity.

- When women show aggression, it’s usually portrayed negatively, unlike men whose aggressive behaviour is often viewed as a display of strength or power.

- Sports create a unique atmosphere where athletes face pressure, discomfort and a lack of control over their surroundings.

- They perform with an audience expecting success or failure.

- So their emotion is displayed more often.

- In a society where we are striving for more equality, the sports media still continues to highlight various disparities between male and female athletes.

Because of him, I also had the amazing opportunity to interview The Mayor of Bournemouth.

I had a great time filming the event and watching the local community join together to show their support for Ukraine 🇺🇦
